1 Getting Started

Follow this simple tutorial to install your new Lulzbot TAZ Modular Print Bed System and ensure your printer keeps performing for years to come. The Modular Print Bed System is compatible with 24-volt TAZ's 3 through 6.

2 Required Materials

(1) LulzBot TAZ Modular Print Bed Heater

(1) LulzBot TAZ Modular Glass/PEI

If purchased after 4/15/2024:
(1) Anderson to Mega-Fit adapter (included)

3 Additional Items Required

You will also need

  • 2 mm hex key or driver included with your LulzBot TAZ
  • Any LulzBot TAZ Desktop 3D Printer version 3 through 6
  • Optional: Scissors or flush cutters

4 Home the Z-Axis

Power on your LulzBot TAZ 3D Printer.

Home your 3D printer by using the Graphical LCD controller to home the printer.

Raise the Z-axis through the Graphical LCD Controller. Navigate to: Prepare > Move Axis > 1.0 > Z-axis > Change the value to at least 200.

5 Prepare Printer

Power off and unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Remove power cord and USB cable

6 Disconnect Cables for Heat Pad and Thermoster

Note:
Your LulzBot TAZ may have a small black zip tie securing the heated bed connector. Use the flush cutters or scissors to cut the zip tie securing the heated bed power connector (larger wire pair).

Disconnect the bed heater power connector (larger wire pair) by pulling cables apart.

Disconnect the bed heater thermistor connector (smaller wire pair) by pulling cables apart and pressing on the lacking tab.

Push tab, then pull smaller connector apart (thermistor)

7 Printing and Prepping New Bed Corners (TAZ 3 - 5 Users)

For users with a generation 3, 4, or 5 TAZ, you will need to download and 3D print new bed corners.

Once this is done, use a soldering iron to transfer or install M3-0.5 x3.8mm heatset inserts into the new corners. Then continue following steps below.

8 Unscrew Bed Washers

Using the 2 mm hex wrench, unscrew the 4 bed washer screws.

Remove the bed washers.

Remove the heated bed assembly.

8D (TAZ 6 only)
Remove 4x 3d printed bed corners and replace with 4 flexible bed corners provided with the LulzBot TAZ Modular Print Bed Heater.

Unscrew all 4 bed washer screws

Remove bed corners
Install TAZ 6 modular bed corner

9 Install Modular Bed System

Place print bed heater between the 4 corners with the cables facing out towards the power switch on the printer.

Plug in the small two-wire connector to the heated bed thermistor connector.

Plug in the larger two-wire connector to the heated bed power connector.

UPDATE 4/16/2024:
If bed heater was purchased after 4/15/2024, you will need to install the Anderson to Mega-Fit adapter between the bed harness and the bed heater.

Place the print surface on top of bed heater with the clear side facing down and the cloudy PEI print surface facing up.

Place new bed heater
Connect smaller cable (thermistor)
Connect larger cable (heater)
Anderson side of adapter connected
Megafit side of adapter connected
Place glass/PEI ontop of bed heater

10 Install Bed Washers

TAZ 6 Users: Place the 16 mm M3 screws into the original bed washers and place them into each corner through the cylindrical spacer.
TAZ 3 - 5 Users: Place the 16 mm M3 screws into the original bed corner fingers and place them into each of the new bed corners you previously printed and transferred heatset inserts into.

TAZ 6 Users: Screw in each bed washer using the 2 mm hex key until the bed washers are flat. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. TAZ 3 - 5 Users: Screw in each bed corner finger into new bed corner using the 2 mm hex key. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

11 You're Done!

You're done with installation! Verify the functionality of the printer prior to your first test print.

Connect the power cable.

Power on your 3D printer.

Check the heated bed temperature in the Graphical LCD Controller on the TAZ.

If a 0 or zero is displayed the heated bed thermistor is not connected properly. When connected properly the heated bed should display an ambient temperature of 10°C - 30°C.

Start a test print and carefully observe the auto bed-leveling sequence.

During the auto bed-leveling sequence, the nozzle should lightly touch down on each metal corner of the bed.

Perform test print.
